In a world marked by diversity, resilience, and progress, International Women’s Day stands as a beacon of celebration, remembrance, and advocacy. Observed annually on March 8th, this day serves as a global call to action, highlighting the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while also emphasizing the ongoing struggle for gender equality. The history of International Women’s Day is rich with stories of courage, determination, and solidarity, reflecting the collective efforts of individuals and movements striving for a more inclusive and equitable world.
A brief history
The roots of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, amidst the backdrop of burgeoning social movements and the fight for women’s rights. The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America to honor the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
Inspired by this initiative, Clara Zetkin, a German socialist and advocate for women’s rights, proposed the establishment of an International Women’s Day at the International Conference of Working Women in 1910. The proposal was met with unanimous approval, and the inaugural International Women’s Day was celebrated the following year in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, with rallies and demonstrations advocating for women’s suffrage, labor rights, and social equality.
Over the decades, International Women’s Day has evolved into a global movement, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. It has become a platform for raising awareness about gender-based discrimination, violence against women, and the need for inclusive policies and practices.
Importance and significance
International Women’s Day holds profound importance in today’s world, serving as a catalyst for change and a symbol of solidarity. It provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in various fields, including politics, science, literature, business, and the arts. It also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and disparities that women continue to face, from wage gaps and limited access to education and healthcare to underrepresentation in leadership roles and pervasive gender-based violence.
Moreover, International Women’s Day serves as a call to action, mobilizing individuals, organizations, and governments to take concrete steps towards gender equality. It is a day to amplify the voices of women, support women’s rights movements, and advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equal opportunities and empowerment for all.
This International Women’s Day, ParkMobile took time to recognize some of our amazing women and what they’ve accomplished while at ParkMobile, part of the EasyPark Group. Meghan Freeman, from our Marketing team, reflects on her personal ParkMobile journey: “I joined ParkMobile in September 2019 as a fresh college graduate, unaware of the exciting career journey that was ahead of me. In the past four and half years, I have transitioned from a CRM Associate to Manager, and now hold the position of Senior Marketing Manager, overseeing a team of two talented CRM team members. My tenure at EasyPark Group has afforded me invaluable insights into the CRM & lifecycle marketing world, thanks to the guidance of exceptional managers and mentors, and has given me the opportunity to lead projects that have significantly impacted the ParkMobile business.” Check out Meghan’s case study with our CRM platform, Braze, here.
Ashlee Barton, Sales Manager, joined ParkMobile in early 2023 and already made a huge impact. “Being recognized as the EasyPark US Rookie of the Year and December’s EasyPark Value Champion have been some of my biggest career highlights. There is no greater feeling than being recognized by your team for the hard work and effort you put into your role. Working at ParkMobile has been a wonderful new challenge and I can’t wait to see what year two brings for me!”
Looking ahead
As we commemorate International Women’s Day, it is essential to reflect on how far we’ve come and the work that still lies ahead. While progress has been made in advancing women’s rights and gender equality, there is much more to be done. We must continue to challenge stereotypes, dismantle systemic barriers, and create a more inclusive and equitable society for future generations.
On this International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the achievements of women around the world, honor the trailblazers who paved the way, and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of a world where every woman and girl can thrive, unburdened by discrimination or injustice. Together, let us strive for a future where equality is not just a dream but a reality for all.
